Monday Genea-pourri, Weeks of Sep 23-29, 2019

Genealogists are great at documenting our ancestors’ lives but not so great documenting our own. I’ll write about what I’ve been doing the past week. This idea came from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musing, who started this meme.

Genealogy
Blog Writing: I was busy with other activities I didn’t get a post done this week.

Webinars/Study Groups Attended:
  • I attended one webinar, entitled “Meaningful Tables and Graphs for Correlation in Family History” by Ruth W. Craig, CG.
  • I attended the Thursday evening study group and we discussed a bit about the APG-PMC that three of us had attended.
  • I attended the Sacramento German Genealogy Society meeting with Mike. Shirley Riemer was the host of a “game show” where we reviewed some concepts of German genealogy.

Client Work:
I had some court record retrievals to get in Solano County and additional ones in Contra Costa County.

Own Work:
I spent the day with my husband’s aunt and cousin on Monday. We interfiled my research papers on the Nilsen family within the binders of materials they had already archived. These records will be donated to the California State Archives. We didn’t finish and plan to have another session soon.

Volunteer Work:
I answered a query at the History Center and worked a few hours at the Oakland FamilySearch Library. A group of teenagers came in and we helped them at the computers. My teenager knew more about Family Tree than I did! It was amazing watching her move through the tree so quickly.

Other:
I have three German language classes per week this fall. Monday evening with Nancy, we have a new student which adds to the pleasure. Wednesday with Kathy is the same. The new class with Sandra on Thursday is different. It was advertised as an intermediate conversation class but is really German 3. However this week we did have conversation in the first hour. I’m teaching four weeks of genealogy staring next week, so will miss some classes.

I need to schedule in music practice—when I think about it, it’s morning and my husband is sleeping so I don’t want to make noise. I also need to walk more—I should do it in the morning before checking the computer and email. Attending yoga twice a week will help.

Vacation
We flew to Phoenix on Friday for a long weekend. Our daughter, Margaret, was in town performing in Ladies in Waiting at the Taliesin West theater. We saw the performance on Saturday evening—my first time—and really enjoyed it. We saw a little of her every day before her evening performances. Saturday we toured Goldfield, a really touristy “ghost town” where we had a mine tour, a mystery shack tour, and rode a train. We had lunch in a western restaurant. On Sunday, we toured an old house in Heritage Square. Norman and I also visited Arizona Falls, the site of a small hydro-power plant. It’s a park, too, and many people stop at  the falls for photo shoots. Monday, before our flight, we toured the old state capitol building, which is now a museum. It was very interesting. All in all, we had a great time.
