Monday Genea-pourri, Week of Sep 19-25, 2022

I have completed one hundred thirty-three (133) weeks of semi-lock down due to Covid-19. We were on vacation in Chicago and New York City this week, so we’re not on any lockdown, but whenever we were in crowds, on the subway, or indoors, we wore our masks.

New to Me—Civil Death Records in North Rhine Westphalia on My Heritage. I wrote about a database I found on MyHeritage that had death records for some collateral Hork family members.

Because we’re on vacation, I have only kept up with genealogy stuff on email. I attended no meetings or study groups. One night I did get in a webinar.

Vacation:

Monday: We arrived in Chicago aboard the California Zephyr, a few hours late. We walked to La Quinta where we stayed overnight.

Tuesday: We tried to go to the Museum of Science and Industry but our Lyft driver dropped us off at the wrong set of museums. We didn’t have enough time to try again, so we just walked around and visited the Field Museum’s gift shop. Before leaving on our train that evening, we had dinner. We then left on the Capitol Limited toward Washington, DC, sleeping overnight in the sleeping car.

Wednesday: Woke up when we stopped in Pittsburgh at about 5:30 am. From there, we followed along a river and I got a few good shots. This route took us through Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Maryland, before arriving in DC in the afternoon. We were a little late, so didn’t have to wait long for the regional train to New York City. We arrived in the city at 5:30 and checked in at the New Yorker Hotel. Our daughters came to meet us for dinner.

Thursday: I bought tickets for two Broadway shows at the two box offices in the morning and dropped off some laundry at the cleaners. We met the girls and had lunch together. We walked around the San Gennaro Festival in Little Italy. After dinner, we saw Music Man with Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster. Really enjoyed it.

Friday: We met the girls at The Strand bookstore and spent time walking around. Ate lunch at a noodle bar, shopped at Buffalo Exchange, snacked at a pastry shop, shopped at a cookbook store full of old cookbooks, did a tasting of amaros and bitters (herbal liqueurs), and ate dinner at an Italian restaurant.

Saturday: We got up super early and caught the Long Island Railroad to Montauk at the tip of Long Island. We did some shopping but mostly had fun hanging out at the beach along the Atlantic Ocean. Lunch included lobster rolls. Had dinner early so we could catch the train back to the city at 7:30.

Sunday: Super late start today. Everyone was so tired from the early start the previous day. We had a nice brunch at 3:30 and then walked around the neighborhoods around NYU. We saw the building used in the external image of the TV show Friends and another used in Sex in the City.

I am reading: Lots of time to read on the train and before bed.

Genealogists are great at documenting our ancestors’ lives but not so great at documenting our own. I’ll write about what I’ve been doing the past week. This idea came from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musing, who started this meme.
