My Trails into the Past

Genealogists are great at documenting our ancestors’ lives but not so great documenting our own. I’ll write about what I’ve been doing the past week. This idea came from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musing, who started this meme. Genealogy I helped a researcher who came into the History Center this week to do some research in court records on men from China. She actually found quite a bit of information in our loose files. We had a very nice conversation with Tom Jones at our Writers SIG meeting. He gave us some great tips about writing and editing. What I took away from the talk: write about the person, not the research. Find the theme and weave that into the story: introduce it, draw it out in the narrative, and then end with theme. Watched a webinar about numbering genealogies, given by Alice Vogt Veen and then made more changes to my numbering in my KDP.  I have decided that I’m done making changes. CGS Research Trip Sunday, April 22, I left Oakland for Salt Lake City to lead a group of genealogists from the California Genealogical Society to research at the Family History Library. There were a total of fourteen of us, including me, at the library. On our way to Wednesday's dinner at the Garden Restaurant On the first day, where I gave a tour of the library to those who were interested. Then I was available on the third floor at the tables near the windows for consultations from anyone in the group. #SLIGExperience The theme for our Land class today was online maps. We learned about many different websites that house lots of images of maps. Some great sites are: Library of Congress National Archives National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Bureau of Land Management USGS David Rumsey’s Historical Map Collection to name a few good sites. State archives, libraries, and historical societies are also other great sites for historical maps.
