52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks – Week 26: Black Sheep

I am working on this year-long prompt, hosted by Amy Johnson Crow . I will write each week in one of my two blogs, either Mam-ma’s Southern Family or at My Trails Into the Past . I’m looking forward to writing about my children’s ancestors in new and exciting ways. This week the theme is black sheep, as in ancestors who didn’t behave well. Usually, these are those ancestors who caused enough trouble that their actions were found in the newspaper, making all of the details about their mishaps known to everyone within the reading public, and now with digitization, to anyone. I don’t seem to have one of those kind of ancestors but thought about someone who just didn’t follow the norms. Or couldn’t seem to keep his act together. My great-grandfather, Johan Anton Hork, was just that. He was born in Oberhundem, Kreis Olpe, in Westfalen on 9 November 1843. [1] He was the fifth child of ten born to Joseph Heinrich Horoch and Maria Catharine Trösster. His father died on 5 Oct...

H is for Hork & Hart

I am participating in the Blogging from A to Z Challenge (April 2016) , where we write 26 blog posts featuring each letter of the alphabet. H is for the Marriage of Susan V. Hork to Andrew E. Hart Today’s post is a two-for-one. Susan Veronica Hork , the sister of my grandfather, William Cyril Hork, married Andrew Edward Hart on 20 May 1900. [1] Ravalli County Marriage Record for the marriage of Andrew Edward Hart to Susan Veronica Hork, 1900 She had just turned 23 years old on April 30. He was also 23 years old. It is not known how they met. They stated on their marriage record they were both living in Hamilton, Ravalli County, but neither of them can be found in the 1900 census. Her brother, Albert, and sister, Carolyn, were the witnesses to the marriage, performed by Father J.B. Carroll, S.J. Albert and Carolyn also lived in Hamilton. What is interesting is the marriage license and certificate were recorded in Ravalli County where Hamilton is located. I a...

52 Ancestors, Week 14: Urselle Clementine Hork Schwalen (1892-1951)

Urselle Clementine Hork was the sister of my grandfather, William Cyril Hork, making her my great-aunt. She was the ninth child born to Johann Anton Hork and Julia Ann Sievert and Cyril was the tenth and last. She was the only child born in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, on 23 Mar 1892 to parents who moved around a lot. [1] By 1900, the family was living in Hamilton, Ravalli County, Montana, the last place that they would live as a family. [2] Even though she was 8 years old in the 1900 census, she was not listed as attending school as her older brothers and sisters were. Ten years later she was listed in the 1910 census with the family as attending school at the age of 18. [3]   It is believed that she graduated from high school as she stated in 1940 that her highest education achieved was 4 years of high school. [4] After finishing school, Urselle worked as an operator for the Montana Independent Telephone Company. [5] This company was located in the Chamber ...

Julia Ann Sievert was born 31 Oct 1854 in Joliet, Will Co, Illinois [1] , the second child of eleven known children of Vincent Sievert and Susana Raduntz.  Her parents came from SchneidemĂ¼hl, Posen, Prussia [2] which today is in Poland. John was a tailor and the family moved often when he searched for work.  Finally the family settled in Hamilton, Ravalli County, Montana. [4]  John and Julia were separated and John died in Sheraton, Wyoming in 1906. Julia Ann (Sievert) Hork with granddaughter & daughter -in-law, Anne (Sullivan) Hork Julia continued living in Hamilton until her death 4 Aug 1928.
