Time For Some More Genealogy Fun!!
Here is our missing from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musings:
1) When was the last time you had Genealogy Fun? It could be research, conferences, a society meeting, or just talking with friends about your research, a favorite trip, etc. Tell us about it!
Here’s mine:
Here I am in the Dallas Love Field awaiting for our flights home, writing this. I have just spent ten days doing the best genealogy fun.
What can be more fun than traveling around the places where my ancestors lived?
I have visited Dallas Public Library where I perused books from Dallas, Erath,
Comanche, Rockwall, and Montague Counties. I looked and found deeds from Dallas
County as well as court records from Dallas County for NHO Polly.
After leaving Dallas, we spent a day in Stephenville, recording deeds from the index, and checking both probate and district court indexes, and then we went to Tarleton State University to the Smith Library archives. There we looked at tax records from 1899 to 1910. The following day, we went to Dublin Library and looked at books that were set aside for us. We then drove to Comanche County and took photos at 5 cemeteries.
After visiting the Comanche History Museum the next day, where I found some small histories of the county, especially one about education, we drove to Nocoma (Montague County) to visit the history museum there.
The next four days were spent on Jacqueline’s families in Jack and Fannin counties in Texas, and Pontotoc County in Oklahoma. Our last day in Texas was spent in Rockwall County with a visit to their historical society.
Despite a flat tire causing us to lose 4 hours and a mix up with a motel reservation, we had a wonderful time and I’d say we had lots of genealogy fun.
The wildflowers were beautiful in fields and along the highways! |

Wow, you did a lot of stuff during your trip! Congratulations on all of your discoveries (which I know you will enter into your genealogy program with full citations :P). Sounds like a great trip.
ReplyDeleteYep, except lots going on this week with out commitments.
DeleteI'd say a 10-day research trip definitely qualifies as lots of genealogy fun in spite of a flat tire. Did you make some great new discoveries?
ReplyDeleteI did not make big discoveries. I used the trip to make sure I have done reasonably exhaustive research. I found no court records, got deed records that are not online, etc. I learned a bit about the small communities where they lived. I'm getting close to writing the stories.
