My paternal grandparents are William Cyril Hork (1899-1967) and Anna Marie Sullivan (1892-1979).

1) Marie Cooke Beckman on her blog, MarieB's Genealogy Blog--Southeastern USA, asked and answered this question, and it is right up the SNGF alley: Did your grandparents know their grandparents? Thank you for the idea, Marie!
Here's mine:
My paternal grandparents are William Cyril Hork (1899-1967) and Anna Marie Sullivan (1892-1979).
Cyril never met his paternal grandparents Joseph Heinrich Horoch (1804-1857) and Maria Catharine Trösster (1813-1874), as they lived and died in Germany. He didn't know his maternal grandparents Vincent Sievert (1823-1892) and Susanna Radunz (1832-1911), though Susanna lived long enough for him to. Susanna lived in Joliet, Illinois, while Cyril lived in Montana. His mother did visit her mother sometime before her mother died.
Anna could have known her maternal grandparents John Gleeson (1835-1915) and Margaret Tierney (1835-1920). They lived in Portland, Oregon between 1908 and their deaths. Anna lived in Anaconda, Montana, but her siblings lived with the grandparents for a short time and it is possible that she visited them, too. She did not know her paternal grandparents Jeremiah Sullivan (1811-1888) and Mary Sheehan (1822-1892). They lived in Minnesota. Jeremiah and Mary died before she was born.
My maternal grandparents are Tom J Johnston (1912-1973) and Pansy Louise Lancaster (1913-2013).
Tom's paternal grandparents were Reuben M. Johnston (1841-1924) and Olivia Jane Jones (1859-1914). Tom likely knew his grandfather, Reuben, as he lived in the same community that Tom did. Tom was a baby when Olivia died. Tom's maternal grandparents were Peter H. Hutson (1853-1930) and Sarah H. Selman (1858-1916). Tom would have known Peter, as he also lived in Comanche County, and likely knew his grandmother, Sarah, though he was quite young when she died.
Pansy's paternal grandparents were William Carlton Lancaster (1873-1946) and Martha Jane Coor (1872-1943). She lived with them in 1940. Even her daughter, Lela Nell, knew them. Her maternal grandparents were Ebenezer Loveless (1851-1929) and Eliza Rodgers (1854-1907). She likely met her grandfather, Ebenezer, but I'm not sure. She did not know her grandmother, Martha, as she died before she was born.

Wow! I'm surprised that your grandparents mostly didn't know theirs, but distance was definitely an impediment.
ReplyDeleteMy maternal grandmother was raised by her grandparents since her mother died in the influenza epidemic. And my paternal grandfather was raised by his maternal grandmother when his mother and grandfather both died in the influenza epidemic. His father had previously died from a ruptured appendix.
ReplyDeleteSo only one of your grandparents even had an opportunity to know or meet all of his grandparents. I hope Olivia did get to meet Tom.
ReplyDeleteYour experience is similar to mine on my paternal line... Even on my maternal one, only one grandparent knew 3 of her 4...
