SNGF -- Celebrate World Music Day

Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:

It's Saturday Night again -

Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!

Our assignment tonight from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musings is to:

1)  According to Wikipedia, today is World Music Day!  How should we celebrate?

2)  How has music affected your life?  What is your favorite music type?  What are your favorite songs?

[Thank you to Janice Sellers for suggesting this challenge to me]

Here's mine:
I’m getting a late start on this because I spent the day visiting the Fresno Public Library’s Heritage Center with the Northern California Chapter of APG (Association of Professional Genealogists). I'm going to focus on listening to music and not on any music I perform.

Growing up, there was always music in our house, mostly from the radio. When my mother was young, she played the current hits. Later in life, she played country music on the radio. I was surprised when some of my pop songs were also being played on the country stations. These singers were John Denver and Kenny Rogers. Their music crossed both genres.

As I developed my musical tastes, I mostly liked pop music. My favorite singers were The Carpenters, John Denver, Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, Elton John, Simon and Garfunkel, and early songs by the Beatles. I also loved show music, and some great musicals were adapted into movies in the 1960s and 1970s. Soundtracks of movies were original then, too. I also listened to instrumental music from groups such as Henry Mancini and Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.

Some of my favorite songs from those days from the above artists include:

  • Whipped Cream by Herb Alpert
  • Can’t Smile Without You by Barry Manilow
  • Yesterday by The Beatles
  • Close to You by The Carpenters
  • Empty Garden by Elton John
  • Peter Gunn & the Pink Panther by Henry Mancini
  • Country Roads by John Denver
  • Sweet Caroline & Brooklyn Roads by Neil Diamond
  • Sounds of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel

Later in life, other bands and singers came along as I followed KFRC and KYA radio. As an adult, I began listening to KFOG until its demise a few years ago. I’ve added other genres, too: classical, oldies from the 50s, rock, and country. However, I have bought very little music, as I don’t keep up with it anymore.

Every once in a while, I will put on some LPs and listen to these above friends and others, too numerous to mention. I own over 500 LPs and CDs. I should put one on now: perhaps the Lumineers, one of my newest acquisitions.
