Monday Genea-pourri, Week of June 30–July 6, 2025

My outside activities this week included phenology and two trips to the History Center. I also went with Elaine to Watershed Nursery and the 4th of July Parade.

Genealogy Volunteer/Work:
On Monday, I hosted another CGS neighborhood meeting with three attending. They were all able to share problems they have and get some suggestions. This week I worked at the History Center on Tuesday and Saturday. Saturday, we had a tour group come in, and we set up stations to view some Welch Family items. On Wednesday, I worked at the Oakland FamilySearch Center and helped a gentleman with the newspaper websites.

At home, I prepared the upcoming BCG-sponsored press release and will send it out this coming week. I’ve been working on the presentation for the Sacramento German Genealogy Society on land records. I’m giving it later this month.

Genealogy Meetings: No meetings this week.

Genealogy Writing/Research:
In preparing the 52 Ancestors post, I did a lot of research into the Sullivan Electric Company, owned by Michael Sullivan in Butte, Montana. The theme was family business but I couldn’t find enough sources to definitively state which of his other relatives also worked for him. So I switched gears and wrote about my grandfather and his brother’s pool hall business. I will get back to the Sullivan problem again and write it up.

Family Business: Pool Hall and Taxi Service
For the theme of “family business,” I wrote about my grandfather and his brother’s business running a pool hall and taxi service. I found quite a few newspaper items about it.

SNGF-- Did Your Grandparents Know Their Grandparents?
We had done this prompt in February, so I mixed it up and used my parents instead.

Webinars/Courses Viewed: None this week

Other:
No hike again this week. Elaine and I drove to Watershed Nursery, and I got a dozen plants for my native garden. I spent the next day repotting them in larger pots. It’s too soon to put them in the ground. We walked with the Friends of Alhambra Creek in the Martinez 4th of July parade. Lots of bystanders cheered as we walked by. On the 4th, I also made my annual viewing of the movie 1776. Finally, I watched Wimbledon tennis every morning, and we have another week coming up! And also Giants baseball games. They ended the week winning.

I am reading:

  • Death of a Snob by M.C. Beaton—FINISHED!
  • Ghosts of Black Diamond by Dan Hanel
  • Miss Merkel: Mord in der Uckermark by David Safier (for German class—up to Chap 35-We’re on hiatus for summer)

Photos for this week. Some critters on flowers.

Genealogists are great at documenting our ancestors’ lives, but not so great at documenting our own. I’ll write about what I’ve been doing the past week. This idea came from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musing, who started this meme.
