Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:
It's Saturday Night again

Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!
Our mission from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musings, is to:
1) Do you recall the layout of one of your family homes (a parent's home, a grandparent's home, your first home with your spouse/SO, etc.)? Can you estimate the size of the house and the size of the rooms? What features were in each room? Can you draw the floor plan, showing doors, windows, etc.?
Here's mine:
I could describe both of my childhood homes, one in
Pittsburg and the other in Walnut Creek, but I will save Walnut Creek for
another day.
Pittsburg, California, at 467 E. 9th Street
We lived here from about 1955 to 1963. During that time,
four children were born, and the six of us lived in a two-bedroom house. By the
time we left, the kids slept upstairs, two to a room, which worked out as there
were two girls and two boys. Our parents slept in the dining room downstairs.
There was only one bathroom upstairs. All I remember about the bathroom was
watching my dad shave and put on a tie.
The downstairs level had a living room with a floor furnace, a dining room, and a kitchen. The kitchen was where Mom made jam, cooked our meals, and washed our hair at the sink. There were a couple of steps from the kitchen down to what we called the basement. This was a big room where the TV was located and probably where we played. There was a back door to the outside. Also from the basement, there was another door to a cellar. Once during the scare of air raids, the county officials came to the house to see if the cellar was large enough for neighbors to use. It wasn’t. Luckily, we never needed to use it except to store stuff.
The backyard had a small cottage, and when we first moved in, it was rented out. Later, my mother rented it and used it as an art studio where she could paint. This was probably when a couple of us were in school. The garage was in the driveway at the back of the house and not attached. It was a long driveway, perfect for riding trikes, bikes, and pedal cars.
The big picture window was where the Christmas tree was
displayed. I remember silver fake trees that she showed a color spotlight on.

Here is the floor plan as I remember it.
I love your photos. Amazing how we all made do with our small houses as we grew up.
ReplyDeleteNow, you can hardly find a small house to buy. They're all McMansions.
DeletePlus families are smaller now in larger houses.
DeleteYou have so many photos from the house! I have a lot of photos my father took, but I can't tell which houses they are from. And you only lived in two houses growing up! That to me is really special. But what is the big dressed-up group in the front of the house?
ReplyDeleteMy birthday party.
DeleteAha! Then which one is you?

DeleteIt it’s amazing how we all managed with our tiny houses back then. As the oldest of five, I was the first to make my bedroom in the basement. I was soon followed by two others, which meant the folks upstairs each had their own bedroom!
