My outside activities this week were numerous. Some will be mentioned below. I spent the weekend at the Walnut Creek Model Railroad Society, where we had an open house. I was a trackwalker from the setup area, which meant I spent a lot of time crawling under the layout and climbing ladders to reach the track in the mountains.
Genealogy
Genealogy Volunteer/Work:
I volunteered at the History Center on Tuesday and the Oakland FamilySearch
Center on Wednesday. I took minutes for the historical societies board meeting.
Genealogy Meetings: Jacqueline and I met briefly and got caught up with our activities since our last meeting. We attended the Kinseekers Military SIG, and the discussion was about the morning reports located at the NARA website. I also attended the OFSC staff meeting on Friday and met with the certification peer group, although only Josh popped in.
Genealogy Writing/Research:
I continued working on the Colman family in
Alaska and California, using the full-text search with the various spellings. At
the FamilySearch Center, I used the full-text search for the Hutson surname in
Texas and found numerous documents in Comanche County.

For the theme of “animals,” I wrote about the

SNGF– Pick an Ancestor: What Story Lines Do You Want to Explore?
We were asked to choose an ancestor and come up
with questions that would help us learn more about the ancestor. I chose my
maternal grandfather. One question I asked: What do you think about when you
fish at Clear Lake?
Webinars/Courses Viewed: I
played catch-up this week, watching webinars that I had missed.
- Finding Frank Henry Hill by Angela Harris (BCG/LFTWebinars)
- Ancestors on the Move: Migration from Farms to Cities, 1870-1920 by Annette Burke Lyttle (LFT Webinars)
- German Genealogy: Latest and Greatest Websites and Tools by James M Beidler (LFT Webinars)

Other:
I have spent most of my
free time this week organizing my slides. I have slides in ten boxes, about 500
slides per box. Some years ago, I had sorted them into categories: friends and
family, vacations, railroad museum, local trips, etc. I couldn’t locate a photo
of our dog, Libby, so I decided to create a spreadsheet with each slide
labeled. I have columns for box number, slot number (there are 30 slots that
hold up to 20+ slides each), date, topic, specific item, and slide number. I
have finished six boxes so far. Still haven’t found one of Libby yet. But in
the future, I will know which box has a particular slide. I am also considering
which slides I’ll donate to various organizations, and which I will just toss.
My children don’t care about photos of flowers.
I am reading:
- How Welfare Worked in the Early United States
by Gabriel J. Loiacono (over halfway done)
- Coming up Short: A Memoir of America
by Robert B Reich – FINISHED!
- Die Trabantenstadt by R Goscinny & A Uderzo (another Asterix in German)
Photos for this week. Some native plants are still blooming in my yard.
Genealogists are great at documenting our ancestors’ lives, but not so great at documenting our own. I’ll write about what I’ve been doing the past week. This idea came from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musing, who started this meme.
