Monday Genea-pourri, Week of February 16–22, 2026

All outside activities past week included the trip up to Ocala using a rental car, staying with Norman’s cousin, Shirley, return south to ride a train in Clewiston, a airboat ride in the Everglades, and a long drive back up to Orlando. I was sick with a head cold and tried to stay away from everyone, but Norman got it, too.

Genealogy Volunteer/Work:
None this week, except for sending the description of the probate class I’m teaching in April to CGS for posting on the website.

Genealogy Meetings: I attended no official meetings this week, but connected with Jacqueline to explain views in AirTable.

Genealogy Writing/Research: I continued writing about the Sievert and Hork families in my 12 for ’26 challenge.

For the third week, I covered my great-grandparent’s life and their children.

Webinars/Courses Viewed: I first reviewed the recording to the first session of the AirTable course I’m taking with Amberly Beck. Then on Friday, I was able to view a portion of the second class while we drove down to Clewiston. I need to watch the recording again to practice the homework.

Other:
Monday, we drove up to Ocala for a four night stay with Norman’s first cousin, Shirley, and her fellow, Dave. We had a nice visit over the four plus days, touring a little of their surroundings, along with a day trip to Gainesville.

On Friday, we drove down to Clewiston to ride the Sugar Express train to Lake Placid. After time to tour the town and eat lunch we returned with a steam engine on the front. Photos below were taken from the Sugar Express train. Really enjoyed seeing the sugar fields, the harvesting, and loading of the sugar unto train cars.

We drove back down to Miami after the ride and stayed overnight in Coral Gables. Dinner was in a nice restaurant but our waiter did not know how to properly serve an Manhattan, nor did he know anything about Amaros. We love teaching waiters about digestives.

On Sunday, we took an airboat ride in the Everglades. We saw lots of aligators! And there were tons of birds: snowy & great egrets, snow geese, cormorants, grackles, and turkey vultures. We’re heading back up to Orlando Sunday evening, as I write this (4.5 hours). Hope we have a train tomorrow, as Amtrak could cancel trains due to the storm on the east coast. We’re headed to NYC next.

Genealogists are great at documenting our ancestors’ lives, but not so great at documenting our own. I’ll write about what I’ve been doing the past week. This idea came from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musing, who started this meme.
