Monday Genea-pourri, Week of March 9–15, 2026

Spent the weekend at Train Club working the set-up position for our open house. Our hike was at Black Diamond Mines Regional Park but I forgot my phone, so no photos were taken.

 Genealogy

Genealogy Volunteer/Work:
I sent out the remaining BCG-sponsored webinar press releases. At the History Center, I worked on answering queries and entering more details to the library database. I attended and took minutes for the Sonoma County Genealogical Society board meeting. On Thursday, I led the writing group and we discussed a couple of submissions, and gave a webinar on church records to Root Cellar. On Saturday, I hosted the third installment of the Precision series at CGS.

Genealogy Meetings: I met with my Renewal Accountability group, Jacqueline, and Military SIG on Monday. Jacqueline and I discussed my trip to visit her this month. I was the only attendee on Friday in the Writing Accountability group.

Genealogy Writing/Research: I am still working on the Lancaster family for March’s 12 for ‘26. I continued working in full-text search at FamilySearch and newspapers at the Portal to Texas History for the next generation, George Wilson Lancaster. These blog posts are at  Mam-ma’s Southern Family. I also fiddled with the Airtable base I made with William Carl Lancaster's newspaper articles, but without much luck.

The Turning Point
For the theme of “Turning Point,” I wrote about how I decided about 15 years ago that all of my genealogy work would try to meet the GPS and follow genealogy standards.

SNGF—A Genealogy Day in Your Life
I describe my genealogy day on Friday, March 13.

My posts for 12 for ’26 for the Lancaster Family:

12for ’26: Newspaper Search at Portal to Texas History for William C. Lancaster
I ended up with 14 pages of newspaper articles naming him or his wife.

Searching for George W. Lancaster (1839-1919) in Full-text Search
This is William C.’s father, and I found a few items I hadn’t seen before. On the items I had seen, I was able to update my source citations.

Webinars/Courses Viewed: I watched no webinars, but I am taking two courses now. We had a discussion session in Airtable because the instructor was ill. I started the Writing for Discovery course. I watched the recorded session, attended the welcome session where we introduced ourselves, and spent 90 minutes note-taking in our writing session. This helped me formulate what I was going to post on my last 12 for ’26 post about George W. Lancaster.

Other:
I was so bummed that I left my phone of the charger as we saw a lot of nice flowers on the hike at Black Diamond Mines Regional Park. Instead, I recorded the names of the plants in my bird notebook.

Photos for this week. Some photos of my plants this week.

Genealogists are great at documenting our ancestors’ lives, but not so great at documenting our own. I’ll write about what I’ve been doing the past week. This idea came from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musing, who started this meme.
