Calling all Genea-Musings Fans:
It's Saturday Night again -
Time for some more Genealogy Fun!!
Our assignment from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musings is to:
1) Reader Sarah emailed: "We pulled
real eighth-grade diploma exams from 1902–1914. In the two Ohio county reports
we found, only 100 of 282 kids passed. They had to spell Constantinople and
Marseilles and answer "Why is tobacco in all its forms more injurious for
a boy than for a man?"
"Could make a fun Saturday Night Genealogy Fun prompt: Take the
15-question quiz and guess whether your ancestors passed.
"Here's the page: https://homeschoolstates.com/research/1914-eighth-grade-exam/"
2) Take the test and tell us your score.
3) Which of your ancestors living in 1914 would pass the test?
Thank you to reader Sarah for suggesting this.
Here's mine:
I failed, getting only 12 of 15 correct. I missed one
geography question and would have known it in 1914. I also missed two math questions because I tried to do them in my
head, since there were no calculators in 1914. I should have done them on
paper. One of the math problems I did wrong. I should have used division
instead of multiplication.
My children’s ancestors who were alive in 1914 who may have taken such a test in 8th grade:
- Anna Marie Sullivan (1892-1979) – Pass. She was a school teacher.
- William Cyril Hork (1899-1967) – Pass, finished HS
- Joseph Norman Gorrell (1869-1960) – Maybe, finished 8th grade
- Matilda Pearl Davey (1880-1958) – Only finished 7th grade
- Nils Arthur Nilsen (1894-1954) – Pass, finished HS
- Agnes H Lundquist (1894-1936) – No idea
- Thomas Newton Johnston (1885-1951) – Maybe, only had an 8th grade education
- Nell Hutson (1888-1919) – No idea
- George W Lancaster (1893-1964) – Pass, finished high school
- Lela Ann Loveless (1896-1951) – Pass, attended high school
The 1940 census gave me some information about their
schooling if the information is correct. Two died before the census was
conducted, so I have no information about their schooling.
