Monday Genea-pourri, Week of December 2-8, 2024

I have completed two hundred and forty-six (246) weeks of semi-lockdown due to Covid-19. My outside activities were two trips to the History Center, a trip to the doctor’s office, a trip to the Oakland FamilySearch Center, and a trip to the Chevron archives.

Genealogy
Genealogy Meetings:
Genealogy meetings this week included the NGS Conference Committee on Monday morning, a Zoom meeting with Jacqueline on Monday afternoon, the Certification Discussion Group on Wednesday, and Gena’s book club on Sunday. I put a library hold on one of the books mentioned about our BYOB (bring your own book) day.

Genealogy Volunteer/Work:
On Wednesday, I presented at the Oakland FamilySearch Center on researching in person at archives and libraries. I had a nice audience who were very interested in doing research in Germany.

I volunteered at the History Center on Tuesday and Saturday. I’m still working on the same collection—this time I’m entering data into the finding aid. On Friday, our volunteers took a trip to the Chevron archives. Wow, what an archive can look like when you have the space and funds to purchase the right storage supplies. It was impressive.

The AppGen owners met on Monday afternoon and made some decisions for the spring session. Afterward, Jill and I continued talking for about an hour. I can’t wait to visit with them in person in March.

Genealogy Writing/Research:
I had previously located the funeral home records on FamilySearch for my grandfather, Tom J Johnston, and his brother, Luther. I added the information about my grandfather to RootsMagic this week.

Blog Post Published:

For the 52 Ancestors’ theme “Hand Me Downs,” I wrote about the hand-me-downs my cousins sent us and the blue jeans I adored. This post was highlighted on Friday Family History Finds, and I got lots of comments from fellow GeneaBloggers who remembered their own hand-me-downs.

We had a huge list of topics to choose from that Randy received from his AI bot. I chose these two topics: presents and trees.

Webinars/Courses Viewed:
I watched no live webinars this week but played catch-up with some I had yet to view.
  • The Art of Self-Editing for Genealogists by Pam Anderson (APG)
  • Locating Church Records for Genealogical Research
  • Church Records -- Combining FamilySearch, Ancestry, Archion, and Matricula - Make the Best of all the Databases! both by Ursula Krause (German Genealogy Headquarters)
Other:
I didn’t hike this week with the group due to a doctor’s appointment but I got in a walk with my husband. I spent much time reading this week and playing with my new iPad.

I am reading:
  • Welcome to the School by the Sea by Jane Beaton—FINISHED!
  • A Forest Journey: The Role of Trees in the Fate of Civilization by John Perlin
Photos for this week.
Here’s a shot from the Oakland Temple grounds and their Christmas decorations.

Genealogists are great at documenting our ancestors’ lives but not so great at documenting our own. I’ll write about what I’ve been doing the past week. This idea came from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musing, who started this meme.

  1. You had one busy week. I don't remember much about hand me downs. I think because I was the oldest sibling and grand daughter so igurss my clothes went to my sister.
