Monday Genea-pourri, Week of August 25–31, 2025

My outside activities this week included doing phenology, hiking in Briones, visiting the history center, one doctor’s appointment, and driving up to Oregon.

Genealogy

Genealogy Volunteer/Work:
I opened and closed at the History Center on Tuesday, covering for our executive director, who is on vacation. I finished up the McLeod collection and took a potential volunteer for a tour of the archives.

My writing group met and we discussed Sheila’s new chapter, which covered her ancestor’s Revolutionary service and life in Pennsylvania as new immigrants. Lynne’s writing about her dog, who passed away, was very touching. I read my latest post about my dad’s work.

Genealogy Meetings:
The CCCGS Roundtable met on Monday, and we discussed the closing of the Plaza Hotel in Salt Lake City. I also met with the accountability group and with Jacqueline on Monday. Jacqueline spoke about her troubles researching her McCurdy family in Arkansas. Keith showed us how to search in several different ways at the RootsMagic SIG.

Genealogy Writing/Research:
I spent more time downloading documents from FamilySearch and Newspapers.com in preparation for my retreat at Jacqueline’s house this coming week.

I submitted five proposals for the 2026 NGS Family History Conference to be held next May in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

For the theme of “off to work,” I wrote about my father and his job working in retail produce.

SNGF– Five Questions for An Ancestor—Anna Maria Gleeson (1860-1912)
I came up with way more than five questions I would like to ask my great-grandmother about her childhood, her purchase of a homestead, and meeting and marrying her spouse. I also asked about her parents and grandparents.

Webinars/Courses Viewed: None this week

Other:
Our hike this week was to Briones Regional Park, starting at the north entrance in Martinez. We went to see the Holocarpha heermannii, also known as Heermann's tarweed, in bloom. The open space was filled with these blooms. I’d never seen it so abundant before.

I got my ears cleared of the wax and can now hear! The hearing aid needs repair, though, and I suspect the wax may be the problem.

Lastly, I spent much of the week watching the U.S. Open Tennis. I have set up my little table to work on the computer while watching, so I managed to get some work done between matches. There is another week of tennis, so I might get in some more watching.

I am reading:

Photos for this week.

Genealogists are great at documenting our ancestors’ lives, but not so great at documenting our own. I’ll write about what I’ve been doing the past week. This idea came from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musing, who started this meme.

  1. I was very surprised to read about the Plaza closing. An era ends. I love your photos. It's looking like fall. Happy September.
