Monday Genea-pourri, Week of November 24–30, 2025

Outside activities included a trip to the History Center, phenology at the Meadow, Thanksgiving at our daughter’s, and working the weekend at the Train Club.

Genealogy

Genealogy Volunteer/Work:
At the History Center this week, I worked on queries. One researcher whom I had been helping via email came into the Center to look at some other items we have.

Genealogy Meetings: I attended the CDG Renewal group and then read Carol’s submission. I sent her some suggestions. Jacqueline and I met, and I heard about her trip to Hawai‘i, and I told her about the news articles I was finding about the Train Club from its inception to the mid-2000s.

Genealogy Writing/Research: I am reading two books to help with my research. I’m taking notes as I read them and checking the sources in the endnotes. They are two different subjects: one on WWI and the other on farming during the westward expansion.

Restarting Research: Who was the Father of Benjamin W. Jones of Rankin County, Mississippi?. For Webinar Wednesday, I described some of the tips I learned from an APG Writers SIG webinar presented by Jan Joyce and how I would apply them to restarting the research for Benjamin W. Jones’ parents.

Other:
We drove up to Santa Rosa to have Thanksgiving with Elizabeth and Tye. We had the usual fixings: turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, baked sweet potatoes, baked squash, broccoli rabe, and apple crisp for dessert. We did a taste test of the two Angels Envy whiskies we bought when in Louisville: rye vs. bourbon. I liked the rye best.

I am reading:

  • The Fourth Division: Its Services and Achievements in the World War by Christian Albert Back & Henry Noble Hall
  • The Farmers’ Frontier 1865-1900 by Gilbert C. Fite--FINISHED!

Photos for this week. A mixture of photos: a sunset on Thanksgiving, the charcuterie board Tye made, and the set-up area of the train club where I did my work this past weekend. From here, I crawl under the layout or climb up on the layout to fix derailed or stuck trains.

Genealogists are great at documenting our ancestors’ lives, but not so great at documenting our own. I’ll write about what I’ve been doing the past week. This idea came from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musing, who started this meme.
