Monday Genea-pourri, Week of August 16–22, 2021

I have completed seventy-five (75) weeks of semi- lock down due to Covid-19. I left the house on several occasions: went to the History Center twice, phenology, and the Maker’s Faire where we had a booth selling used books. Wore my mask when around people or going into a restaurant.

Genealogy

Blog Writing: I wrote two posts this week.

52 Ancestors—Week 33: Tragedy—Death By Train. I wrote about Joseph McFall being killed by a train he stepped in front of.

Online Study Groups & Meetings Attended: On Monday, I met with Jacqueline and heard out her trip to the coast, and later with my AppGen group to do more planning. I met for a short time with Amigos on Wednesday. We’re going to move our meeting time to Tuesday afternoons so I can work my volunteer shift at the Oakland FamilySearch Library. Our Friday peer group caught up with our progress and had a short discussion about MGD chapter 9.

Webinars & Classes Attended
: I watched one webinar this week “Standards for Genealogical Documentation,” given by Tom Jones for the BCG, and I had hoped to view two others, but will watch the recordings.

Client Work/Presentations:

  • Picked up a divorce record from the county court office that I had ordered and sent it off to the client. Glad it took less time than they said.
  • I spent most of my free time this week working on the land class handout, exercises, and PowerPoint presentations. I’m about ¾ of the way done.
  • I submitted an article for Der Blumenbaum.
  • Lastly, I attended training for hybrid classroom teaching at Acalanes Adult School. I plan to do my class this fall virtually, but was interested in how a class could be taught hybrid.

Volunteer & Own Work:
I worked most of Tuesday and part of Thursday at the History Center preparing for the book sale on Saturday, and then spent the whole day at our booth at the Maker’s Faire. I also took minutes at the Board meeting for the historical society. On Wednesday, I volunteered at the Oakland FamilySeach Library, but didn’t help anyone.

Other:
I’m reading the following books:

  • Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park—Finished!
  • Girl Waits with a Gun by Amy Stewart

Photos for this week: Smoky sky this week.

Genealogists are great at documenting our ancestors’ lives but not so great documenting our own. I’ll write about what I’ve been doing the past week. This idea came from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musing, who started this meme.
