Monday Genea-pourri, Week of August 9–15, 2021

I have completed seventy-four (74) weeks of semi- “lock down” due to Covid-19. I left the house on several occasions: got new shoes Big 5, dropped off a box at the UPS store to return to Amazon, went to the History Center and phenology, visited a house for sale, and had a family lunch at the Old Spaghetti Factory with 18 other people.

Genealogy

Blog Writing: I wrote two posts this week.

52 Ancestors—Week 32: In the City—Shopping in Oakland I wrote about my mother and her mother getting caught on film while shopping on Broadway in Oakland.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun—Three (Or More) Things About a Great-Grandparent I wrote about my father’s maternal grandmother, Anna Gleeson Sullivan, who applied for homestead land.

Online Study Groups & Meetings Attended: Our AppGen group met twice this week to plan out how to draw for the scholarship and classes. On Saturday we drew for the scholarship. I met with Amigos on Wednesday and the Friday peer group. It’s always great meeting up with my genie friends.

Webinars & Classes Attended
: I watched one webinar this week “Introduction to Researching Your Mississippi Ancestors,” and signed up for SLIG Academy, for course 1: Writing and Documenting for Peer Review. I decided to sign up at the last minute.

Client Work/Presentations: I have several lesson plans to work on in the next few weeks before my vacation. I added to my farming talk, planned out one of the intermediate classes at the adult school, and worked on exercises for the land course. Each day gets me a little closer. I also submitted a request for a divorce record at the local county court office for a client.

Volunteer & Own Work:
I worked most of Tuesday at the History Center adding collections to the Online Archive of California. I also worked some on Amos Gorrell’s diary to add to the farming talk. I found some nice maps.

Other:
Friday, was the Walnut Creek Model Railroad club meeting and I hosted the Zoom part. It is easier to take minutes in person, but with the rule of wearing masks indoors again, I didn’t want to be in a group of people. It was much harder taking minutes on Zoom, especially with those at the club wearing masks.

Sunday, my brothers and sisters and their families met at the Old Spaghetti Factory for a get-together, a first in over 18 months. It was very nice seeing everyone and we missed those few who were unable to make it. I enjoyed meeting Trish in person and seeing the Ryan & Hilary’s new baby.

I’m reading the following books (I know, I’m crazy):

  • A Place to Hang the Moon by Kate Albus—Finished!
  • Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park
  • Girl Waits with a Gun by Amy Stewart

Photos for this week: Two views of our table at the Old Spaghetti Factory.

Genealogists are great at documenting our ancestors’ lives but not so great documenting our own. I’ll write about what I’ve been doing the past week. This idea came from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musing, who started this meme.
