12 for '26: James Gorrell, Father of Amos Gorrell, Sr?

According to many online trees, Amos Gorrell, Sr. (1804-1890), was the son of James Gorrell and Sarah Mulholland. I have no documentation to that affect other than a little undated history written by Joseph J. Gorrell, of Winamac, Indiana. It was later revised about 1930 by Edmund C. Gorrell, and revised again in 1953 by Janet Gorrell Meyer.

The beginning of the book starts out with brothers, James and William, sons of Oliver Gorrell, who came to America. One settled in Virginia and the other in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. James married Sarah Milholland, native of Virginia, born 6 April 1771. The book claimed James was born in Ireland on 13 March 1770. Amos was one of the twenty-one children born to them, seventeen named. The book then continues covering James’s son, Joseph’s lines down to him.[1]

I am hesitant to believe the story of Oliver being James’ father, nor that the sons were soldiers of Robert Emmet, the Irish insurrectionist. In Beaver County tax records, I discover two men named James. One appears to have died in 1806, when Elizabeth is taxed the next year instead. The other James died in 1826, when Gorrell heirs are taxed in 1827 and later in 1829, Sarah is taxed on livestock. It is quite possible that the father of James, who married Sarah, was the James, husband of Elizabeth. More research is needed. First, let’s analyze the surviving tax records in Beaver County for clues.

Beaver County was created on 12 March 1800 from parts of Allegheny and Washington Counties.[2]  The Gorrell men were found in South Beaver and Ohio Townships. Both townships are located north of the Ohio River. If they were living in Beaver already before it became a county, then I should check records of Alleghany and Washington counties for possible earlier records.

Tax Records Research
The images of tax records for South Beaver and Ohio Townships came from photocopies of tax records held by the Beaver County Genealogy and History Center in Beaver.[3] The researcher volunteer scanned the pages that contained the name Gorrell in the various of spellings. South Beaver was north of Ohio, with the New Lisbon Road separating them. Ohio Township is north of the Ohio River.

I have added the five census enumerations: 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, and 1840 for analysis and correlation to the tax records. Not all the taxpayers will be in the census by name, as some may still be living in the parental home.

Once I finished this survey, I submitted the whole report to Claude.ai Opus 4.8 High, asking it to organize the data in another way to see each person’s records separately. I also asked it what conclusions could be discovered from the data and what other resources should be investigated next. Rearranging the material by person did aid in additional analysis. However, I regret asking for analysis. For now, I’m going to ignore the analysis, so I can analyze the material myself. That will be the next step.

1800 South Beaver Township census.
The only townships at this time were First Moon, Hanover, North Beaver, Second Moon, Sewickley, and South Beaver. The Gorrells were enumerated in South Beaver Township. Here is a map of the county in 1800.[4]

Two men were enumerated next to each other. One James is older than the other, also indicated by the senior and junior appendages to their name. It is possible the James senior is James junior’s father.

James Gurl Junr. 4 males under 10, 1 male 26-44, 2 females under 10, 1 female 26-44.[5]

COMMENT: if James Senr was over 45, he was born before 1755. James Junr was between 26 and 44, so born between 1756 and 1774. If he was born closer to 1774, then James Senr could be his father. James Junr had six children all under 10, so the first could have been born about 1790, which may push his age closer to 1770, the proposed age for Amos’ father.

By 1802, South Beaver was divided into three townships: South Beaver, Little Beaver, and Big Beaver. In 1849, the northern part of Beaver County went to the formation of Lawrence County. Ohio township was formed in 1805 by the division of South Beaver, being the southern section of that township.

COMMENT: The James Gorrell Junior has land. No deed has been found for the purchase of this land in Beaver County, suggesting that the land may have been purchased in Alleghany or Washington County before the formation of Beaver County. No deed for the land was found in Alleghany County, nor I am not sure how James Dunkin (or Duncan) fits in and I’m not sure why James Junior was listed twice. It is possible that either James Dunkin was renting from James Gorrell.

COMMENT: Between 1804 and 1806, there were two men named James Gorrell taxed. One was listed as senior and the other junior. There is no guarantee that they are father and son, but could be. The elder Gorrell did not own land, only a horse and cow. The younger one owned land. In 1807, Elizabeth Gorrell is taxed for the horse and cow, making her likely the widow of James Gorrell Senior, who may have died between 1806 and 1807. The James listed here is likely the James junior from earlier tax records.

1810 Beaver County, census.
This census is in loose alpha order, so no sense of neighborhood. On Ancestry, the township listed is Ohio, but the images are not arranged in page order and portions of two townships can be on the same page. Looking at the census (which is the order on the microfilm) at the Internet Archive, the first page of South Beaver Township was on page 418. The last name was in the “Bs” and a note written to see pages 461-466, making the census in South Beaver, not Ohio Township. I find James Gorrell and Elizabeth Gorrell on page 462. These two names match the same names in the 1809 and 1810 tax records. This James is likely the younger or junior from earlier tax records and 1800 census. Elizabeth’s household only has her in it. Amos, who was born in 1804, was one of the males under 10.

COMMENT: Here James is aged between 26 and 45, making his birth between 1766-1784, with the 1770 year still fitting. Likely his wife is the female 26-44. The woman over 45 could be his wife if she was older than him, or another woman, such as his mother-in-law, since James Senr.’s wife, Elizabeth is enumerated by herself. I need to investigate the Milholland family.

COMMENT: Elizabeth is crossed out and James now has 3 horses and 3 cows, perhaps gaining the livestock from Elizabeth. She likely died between 1810 and 1811.

COMMENT: In 1812, a younger James Gorrell appeared, making him likely 21 years of age and born about 1790. Could he be a son of the elder James? There is a male 16 to 25 in James’s 1820 household that could represent this James. Since they are listed in separate townships, there is no senior/junior designations.

COMMENT: There is now two James Gorrells in South Beaver township, a senior and junior. The junior could be a son of the senior. One hint is, Senior has 50 acres less than before and Junior has 50 acres more. Elizabeth was listed again but crossed out, probably due to tax collector copying an earlier record.

COMMENT: Between the two townships, we have James Gorrell taxed on 300 acres in both with the same amount of livestock. Each township had its own tax collector, so if James’s land straddled both townships, then he may have been taxed in both, but why the same amount? What happened to James the younger with 50 acres? It is possible that the younger James has married and moved further west into Ohio.

COMMENT: There is now a James Gorrell with a saw mill. Does James Gorrell own both? Since we saw he had land in both townships, perhaps he now has a saw mill. There is not senior/junior after their names, so it suggests these are the same men.

The Gorrell name is butchered and he appeared as the last name in the Ohio Township. The other James did not appear and may be within this James’ household.

COMMENT: If James was born in 1770, then he would be 50 years old and the male 45 or older. This census lists both men 16-18 and 16-25. Since Amos was born about 1804, he would have been about 16 and fall under the 16-18 males, as well as the 15-25. This census also includes 2 foreigners not naturalized. Are they the two older adults, who may have come from Ireland as the little booklet suggest, or perhaps two of the 16-25 males or females or the male 26-44 are laborers who live with them. No naturalization records for Gorrells has been found. The young children under ten could be children of the adults in their 20s instead of Sarah, who would be pushing the upper limit of her childbearing years. The entry in Ohio township

COMMENT: The James Gorrell with the 300 acres dropped off after 1820. He could have sold the land and then owned the sawmill. But now in 1827, there are Gorrell heirs being taxed in both South Beaver and Ohio, suggesting that James Senior in both townships is likely the same man and has died. It is possible that he owned land that straddled South Beaver and Ohio townships. Amos is still a single man. He married Leah Wollam in Columbiana County, Ohio, on 24 May 1827.[45] Columbiana County is just west of Beaver County though the county seat of Lisbon may have been farther than the Beaver County seat, Beaver. Perhaps Leah’s family lived in Columbiana County.

Amos, who had appeared in the 1826-28 tax records in South Beaver, was enumerated in Fallston Borough, and was then taxed there between 1830 and 1837.

Summary
Seeing the data in this manner makes it easy to see who was present in each year, but not how each person’s assets changed over time or any analysis about that. Gorrell members came in and left. Assets changed. Land ownership changed. This data needs to be reorganized. The next post will show what Claude.ai can do to reorganize the data by person.
