1950 Census Prep for Norman’s Paternal Relatives

I have completed the prep for the upcoming release of the 1950 federal census on April 1. This last set are for my husband's paternal relatives.  I need to know the address of each person in order to locate them in specific Enumeration Districts. At first, we will be browsing the records until indexes are completed. To find their address, I used city directories, voter registrations, newspaper articles, and other records that give addresses. These are the direct ancestors who I expect to find on my mother’s side of the family. By using the Unified Census ED Finder on the Steve Morse One Step site, I located the Enumeration District (ED) numbers for the following addresses. Those on farms, will be more troublesome and I will likely have to wait for an index. NARA is supposed to have an index, using an application that can “read” handwriting. We’ll see how well it works on April 1. Below is the list of his ancestors, their address and the possible ED they will be in. ...

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun - RootsTech 2022

It's  Saturday Night  - time for more  Genealogy Fun! Our mission from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musing is to: 1)  The RootsTech 2022 Virtual Conference was Thursday through Saturday (March 3-5) this week.  Did you register and attend classes?  Did you watch the Keynote talks?  Did you visit the virtual Expo Hall?  What was your favorite experience? Here’s mine: I registered for RootsTech with the idea of viewing the presentations, but ended up having other activities that took up my time. I watched no live presentations and viewed seven videos on Thursday and Saturday. I have collected links to others that I will watch in the future.  Many of the presentations are basic or intermediate level, but I view subjects I’m interested in to get tips on possible sources to use in my own presentations. These presentations often give me ideas on how to improve or create my own. I also checked out the RootsTech Relatives. Of the 31,625 r...

1950 Census Prep for Norman’s Maternal Relatives

I have begun locating the Enumeration Districts (EDs) for our relatives who were living in 1950. Lisa’s paternal relatives can be found here . Her maternal relatives here . In order to locate the EDs, I need to know the address of each person. I begin by checking my genealogy database for a clue to their address and if I don’t have one near the 1950 time-frame, seek out a source on Ancestry or FamilySearch, using such sources as city directories, voter registrations, newspaper articles, and other records that give addresses. These are the relatives I expect to find on my husband Norman’s maternal side of the family. Nilsen Family Arthur N. Nilsen is Norman’s maternal grandfather. I know he and his wife, Lena, were living at 2114 X Street in Sacramento around 1947 from a city directory. When he died in 1954, he was living in Rio Linda on their chicken ranch. But when did they move there? Rio Linda is a small town in the county of Sacramento and there are no Sacramento County dir...
