John H. Sullivan is my paternal great-grandfather, the father of Anna Marie Sullivan who married William Cyril Hork. I have no records naming him until he shows up in Dakota Territory getting land from the federal government. Below is a timeline of the information I have already gathered. Once this is created, I can then do more searching in newspapers, full-text search at FamilySearch, and regular searching at Ancestry and other genealogy database sites.
Creating this timeline will likely spark new questions, which will be put into red text. I might even find conflicts that need to be addressed.
1854 June 20. John H. Sullivan was born 20 June 1854. There is no birth or baptism record for him. Other documents suggest his birth range: His intent naturalization in 1882 said he was born in 1853.[1] His land patent application in 1881 said he was over 21, and his own testimony as the claimant on 10 June 1882 stated he was 29 (1853).[2] 1900 census gave June 1854.[3] 1910 census indicated 1853/54,[4] and the death certificate gave the full birth date of 20 June 1854.[5] He gave the information on the naturalization and patent application. The census records informant is unknown. The county hospital gave the full birthdate, but likely from John himself or his family. None of the dates really conflict as he was born either in 1853 or 1854.
1860 Feb 13. Ann Gleeson was born in Carleton Co, Ontario.[6] She claimed she was born in 1859 when she filed her intent to naturalize in 1880.[7] She likely said 1859 so she would be 21 years old.
1865 Oct. John arrived in the United States at New York. This came from the Intent to Naturalize.[8]
1880 Feb. Ann Gleeson arrived in the United States via Port Huron from the Province of Ontario.[9]
1880 Oct 7. Ann Gleeson settled on northeast quarter of the northeast quarter of Section 9 and the north half of northwest quarter and northwest quarter of northeast quarter of Section 10 in Township 104 of Range 60 West. Commenced to build a house and break the soil.[10] This land is in Davison County, Dakota Territory (South Dakota).
1880 Oct 7. Ann Gleeson filed her intent to become a citizen.[11]
1880 Nov. John claimed he declared his intent to become a citizen on election day in November 1880. However, the clerk of the court in Davison County could not locate any record.[12]
1881 Apr 21. John filed for 160 acres in the southeast quarter in Section 5 of Township 104 North in Range 60 West of the 5th Principal Meridian. This land is in Davison County, Dakota Territory. He applied for a homestead as a single man and U.S. citizen.[13]
1881 May 26. Ann Gleeson filed a preemption for 160 acres of land described as northeast quarter of the northeast quarter of Section 9 and the north half of northwest quarter and northwest quarter of northeast quarter of Section 10 in Township 104 of Range 60 West, alleging settlement on 7 Oct 1880. She paid $200 for the land and filed her proof.[14]
1881 Sep 15. John built his house.[15]
1881 Oct 1. John moved onto the land.[16]
1881/1882 John married Ann Gleeson sometime between his application for homesteading on 21 April 1881 when he stated he was single, and the making of proof for the cash sale on 10 June 1882 when he stated he was married. It was likely at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell.[17]
1882 Jun 10. Even though he claimed to be a citizen when applying for the homestead, he filed his intent to naturalize on 10 June 1882, claiming he was born in Ireland in 1853 and arrived in New York in October 1865. His original document was in the file.[18] This was because he thought he had filed in 1880 and it was lost or misplaced.
1882 June 10. Instead of fulfilling the five-year requirement for homesteading, John purchased the land in full on 10 June 1882 for $200. In his testimony to prove his improvements, he stated he was 29 years old. He built his framed house on 15 September 1881, measuring 12x16 feet, and began living there on 1 October. He broke seven acres of land and dug a well. He estimated the value of his farm at $150. His family consisted of a wife, that he has lived continuously on the farm except temporary when his wife lived on the land. He said he had business at different times in Mitchell. He grew flax and potatoes.[19] His two witnesses, Ira M Shannon and S.M. Creppen, gave the same basic answers.[20]
1882 Oct 9. John and Annie Sullivan sold a lot in Mitchell, Davison Co, Dakota Territory to Henry L. Warne for $1. This was just a strip of 6 inches.[21] Q: How did they get this land? The land records are not online. The few deeds I got came from the County Recorder’s office in Mitchell when I researched there in 2017. I need to review my notes and check to see if the deeds are now online on the county’s website. They were digital on their office computers.
1882 Nov 14. John sold lot no. 11 in Block no. 2 in the town of Mitchell to Annie Sullivan for $1200.[22] Q: Again, when did he acquire this land?
1883 May 25. Helena M. “Nellie” Sullivan was born. The baptism record said she was baptized on 30 May 1883 and was born 25 May 1885. The sponsors were John and Ann Gleeson.[23] Her death certificate and tombstone give the date as 25 May 1885.[24]
1884 May 19. John and Annie sold the southeast quarter of Section 5, Township 104, Range 60 West containing 160 acres for $1500 to John Gleeson.[25] There was an incumbrance of a $200 mortgage due one year after date. This is the land that John purchased from the government. John Gleeson was Annie’s father. Q: Did they have trouble farming? Was the weather etc. something that contributed to the sale? Need to look at newspapers a year or so before the sale.
1885 Feb 28. Loretto M. Sullivan was born. She was baptized at Holy Family Catholic Church on 3 March 1885, with John and Ann Gleeson as sponsors.[26] The baptism records named her Mary Margaret, which is likely a saint’s name but she was called Loretto by the family.
1887 Feb 9. John Cyril “Jack” Sullivan was born. He was baptized on 29 March 1887 with John and Ann Gleeson as sponsors.[27]
1888 Mar 3. Annie and John H Sullivan sold lot number 11 in Block 2 (except the strip of land 6 inches wide) to W.G. & Y.L. Davison for $3000.[28]
1888 Sep 20. Annie and John H Sullivan sold lots 1 and 2 in Scott Addition to HS Ballou and JA Dean for $2200, along with incumbrance of $1500 mortgage.[29] Q: When did they buy these lots?
1889 Birth of Rosemary Sullivan who died as an infant. There were no baptism records for her at Holy Family but they may have moved before she was born. The only knowledge of this child is from my father’s sister, June M. Hork[30]
1889-1891 John and Ann moved to Montana sometime between the sale of the lots above and the birth of Ethel.
1889 Nov 2. South Dakota became a state. It is very possible they were not living in South Dakota when it became a state.
1889 Nov 8. Montana became a state.
1891 Feb 11. Ethel Elizabeth Sullivan was born in Anaconda, Deer Lodge County, Montana. She was baptized on 13 February 1891 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church.[31]
1891 John H Sullivan may have lived at 35 Montana Avenue in Carroll, working as an electric engineer for Anaconda Company.[32] Carroll was located 1.5 miles east of Anaconda.
1892 Oct 15. Anna Marie Sullivan was born in Anaconda, Deer Lodge County, Montana. She was baptized on 19 October at St. Paul’s Church.[33]
1900 John led a household at 709 West Commercial Avenue, Anaconda. He was an electrician. In the household were Anna, his wife; Nellie (May 1873, should be 1883); Loretto (Feb 1885); Cyril (Feb 1887); Ethel (Feb 1891); Anna (Oct 1893); Katie (Jun 1877) who was listed as a niece.[34]
1902-1905 John lived at 709 West Commercial Avenue. He worked for the Anaconda Copper Mining Co as a dynamo tender in the Upper Power House. His son Cyril worked as a messenger for the main office.[35] In 1905, he was listed as a machinist at the small power house at the Reduction Works. Cyril continued as a messenger. Loretto was a clerk for the Copper City Commercial Company.[36] Q: they lived at this address nearly 10 years. Did he purchase the property?
1906 The family lived at 611 Maple Street. John was a flueman at the Reduction Works. Cyril was a laborer at the Anaconda Copper Mining. Loretta worked at the Copper City Commercial Company.[37] Q: if owned the previous property, did they sell it? Or were they foreclosed on?
1909 The family lived at 709 Locust Street. John was a watchman. Cyril was a laborer at the Reduction Works.[38]
1910 The family was enumerated at 405 Locust Street, as renters. John worked as a watchman at the smelter. Also in the house were Anna, his wife, and children: Nellie M (25), Loretto (24) worked as a milliner, Cyril J (22) worked as a timekeeper at the smelter, Ethel E (18) at school, and Anna M (16) at school.[39]
1910 The directory gave his address as 400 Cedar. Also in the directory were Cyril, Ethel E, Anna M, and Helena M. John was a laborer at the Surface Reduction Works.[40]
1912 Jan 3 John’s wife, Anna, died of melancholia. Their address was 212 E 5th Street. She was buried at Mt. Carmel Cemetery on 5 Jan 1912.[41]
1912 Aug 13 Helena “Nellie” married Harold H. Goe in Portland, Multnomah Co, Oregon.[42] Q: Why did she marry in Portland? Where was Harold Goe from?
1915 John lived at 1016 E 3d Street, working as a laborer for the Reduction Works. Loretto lived at 516 Pine Street and worked as a milliner at the Copper City Commercial. Harold Goe was an assistant engineer of tests at the Reduction Works. He and Nellie lived near 404 E 3rd.[43]
1917 Jan 8. Loretto M married James LeRoy Patterson at St. Paul’s Church in Anaconda.[44]
1917 John was a laborer at the Reduction Works. No address was listed for him. Nellie was a domestic at St. Ann’s Hospital. Harold was a superintendent at the Anaconda Copper Mining Co’s Brick Department. He lived at 501 Pine.[45]
1920 John was not found in the census. Q: Where was he?
1922 Cyril married Effa Laverne Wilson likely in Los Angeles. Q: Since marriages are often where the bride lived, where was she prior to the wedding?
1922 Nov 30. Anna Marie married William Cyril Hork at St. Patrick’s Church in Butte, Montana. Her sister, Ethel, and cousin, Daniel J Sullivan, were the witnesses.[46]
1923 John lived at 144 Grand Avenue in Ocean Park, California, at the same address as his daughter and son-in-law, Loretta and James L Patterson.[47] Q: when did the Pattersons move to California? Did John go with them?
1925 Oct 20. Ethel E. married John Vir Quigley at St. Catherine’s Church in Burlingame, San Mateo County, California.[48] Q: When did Ethel move to California? Where was he from?
1927 Oct 26. Ethel E Quigley died at Murray Hospital, Butte, Montana due to eclampsia with convulsions, contributory from hypertension & premature delivery. Her usual address was Burlingame, California.[49] The previous certificate was for Infant Quigley, who died at 7 months due to her mother having eclampsia.[50] Q: Why was she in Butte? Perhaps that was where there was a good hospital. The informant for both deaths was Mrs. Harold H. Goe, Ethel’s aunt. Perhaps her husband, Vir, was working away and she was staying with her aunt, Nellie (Helena M. Goe).
1928 John lived at 611 Maple Street with Helena & Harold Goe, as an electrician at the Anaconda copper Mining Co.[51] Q: Did he move to California to live with his daughter, Loretto, and then moved back to live with daughter, Helena?
1930 The directory for Anaconda listed him at the same address above.[52]
1930 John was enumerated in the household of James Leroy Patterson at 1682 Normandie St in Los Angeles, California.[53] Q: So, he either moved back to California, or somehow, the directory people thought he still lived in Anaconda.
1931 He lived at 1333 N Euclid Avenue in Ontario, San Bernardino County,[54] with his daughter Loretto and son-in-law, James Leroy Patterson.[55]
1932 May 28. John died at the San Bernardino County Charity Hospital. His residence was listed as 513 East E Street in Ontario. He was there 22 days and died from myocarditis.[56]
1932 May 31. Funeral for John was conducted at St. George’s Catholic Church. He was buried in the Catholic Cemetery in Pomona.[57]
What the
Timeline Reveals
Timelines help with migration patterns. John H. Sullivan and his family first lived in Davison County, Dakota Territory, where three children are born, and then moved to Anaconda, Deer Lodge County in Montana where the last two are born (though it is not revealed where Rosemary was born and died).
However, there is some more research to do to figure out when John moved to California. He was listed in the 1923 directory in Los Angeles at the same address as his daughter, Loretta, and her husband James Leroy Patterson. But then in the 1928 Anaconda directory, he was at the same address as his daughter, Helena and her husband, Harold H. Goe. Finally in 1930, he was enumerated with the Pattersons in Los Angeles, California, and in the 1931 directory at the same address as the Pattersons in Ontario, California. That was his last move, as he died in California.
John’s death notice published in an Anaconda newspaper might be a good clue: “Mrs. H. H. Goe returned last night from Ontario, Cal., where she was called on account of the illness and death of her father, John H. Sullivan, early-day and highly esteemed resident of Anaconda, who died May 28 following a lingering illness. Mr. Sullivan came to Anaconda from South Dakota with his family in 1889 and resided here until 1925, when he moved to California for the benefit of his health. He made his home with his daughter, Mrs. J.S. Patterson.”[58]
So, if he did go to California in 1925, why was he in a 1923 directory? It is possible that Helena got the year wrong. Why then was he listed in the 1928 Anaconda directory? Did the directory company use some older information?
Doing some newspaper search, I discovered there were multiple John H. Sullivan’s listed. It is possible that some of those I listed in the early years in Anaconda were other John H Sullivan men. Perhaps deed research will help sort them out.

#52Ancestors: Week 41 – “What the Timeline Shows”
This is my ninth year working on this year-long prompt, hosted by Amy Johnson Crow (https://www.amyjohnsoncrow.com/) at Generations Cafe. I write each week in one of my two blogs, either Mam-ma’s Southern Family or My Trails into the Past. I have enjoyed writing about my children’s ancestors in new and exciting ways.

No record of the marriage is listed in the record of sacraments. Email dated 19
Sep 2016 from Jenny Schreiner, stated their records go back to 1882. Author
visited the church on 2 Aug 2017 and checked the register. The first entry of
the typed book was Nov. 1882. The church was founded in 1880, so it is possible
the first few pages of the original book were lost before the copy was made.
