Davey Family: Sorting Through Some Deaths in Indiana

This database at Ancestry, “Indiana, U.S., Death Certificates, 1899-2011,” is new to me and I have found a few death certificates for my husband’s Davey family in Indiana.

The first I searched for was Edward N. Flynn, who died in 1916 in Jeffersonville, Clark County. He did not appear under his full name but rather his initials, E. N. Flynn.[1] I had previously found two obituaries for him.[2] He served as mayor of Jeffersonville from 1905 to 1909. He never married and his sister, Mayme Wooley, was the informant on his certificate. Edward was the son of John L. Flynn and Elizabeth Davey.

Next, I found Edward’s father, John L. Flynn, who died on 26 October 1907 in Jeffersonville, Clark County.[3] The age and date of birth on the certificate were 78 years, 5 months, and 11 days old, and born on 15 May 1829. His tombstone reads 15 May 1830. The informant for his death certificate was his second wife, Carrie Flynn. It is quite possible that she got the information about his parents wrong. His father was listed as J.L. Flynn of Scotland and his mother as Elizabeth Davey of England. Elizabeth Davey was the name of his first wife.

Edward’s sister, Mayme Wooley, died on 23 January 1918 also in Jeffersonville.[4] Her informant, Mr. J. Cottrell, did not know the names or birthplaces of her parents. Her address was the same as his, and her occupation was a housekeeper. Mayme was listed as a widow, the wife of Joseph Wooley. Actually, her husband was Jacob Woolley and he died in 1893, though his wife was not named in the death notice.[5] In 1880, his wife was Sallie J., and four children, Charles, Oswill C, Monita H, and Walter S., all under 13 years of age lived in the household.[6]  To sort this family out, I found his Find a Grave memorial. He was buried in Eastern Cemetery in Jeffersonville. His grave marker also shows Moneta H, born in 1872 and died in 1894, on the same stone as his.[7] Also linked is Sallie J, wife of J.G. Woolley, who died on 21 March 1881.[8] If this is the mother of the children, then his wife from the obituary could be Mayme. Clark County records on FamilySearch are locked and the continued research will need to be at the Oakland FamilySearch Library.

There are likely more family members to search for in this database and I will revisit it again in the future.
