Monday Genea-pourri, Week of August 30–September 4, 2021

I have completed seventy-seven (77) weeks of semi- lock down due to Covid-19. This past week, I left the house to volunteer at the History Center and the Oakland FamilySearch Library, and do phenology.

Genealogy

Blog Writing: I wrote two posts this week. My 52 Ancestor post on the McFall actresses was highlighted in the 52 Ancestors’ email this week.

52 Ancestors—Week 35: School—Lela Nell’s School Report Cards Help Tell a Story I wrote about my mother’s report cards from second, fourth, fifth and eighth grades and how they document her family’s moves.

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun—What Was Your First Real Job? I wrote about the summer job I had at my high school library.

Online Study Groups & Meetings Attended:
I met with Jacqueline and we spoke about her past and upcoming motorhome trips. I met with my AppGen partners for our weekly planning meeting. Our four Amigos met on Tuesday and got caught up. I attended the Certification Discussion Group and listened to the presentation on the Mentor & Accountability Groups. And lastly, meet with my peer group on Friday, where we discussed progress and chapter 10 in Mastering Genealogical Documentation.

Webinars & Classes Attended
: I did some catching up on missed webinars:

  • Civil War Medical Records by Craig Scott

Client Work/Presentations:
I booked a new presentation with the Mt. Diablo Genealogical Society for a date in October. I’ll be doing a talk on church records. I continued working on my Land lessons and am almost done. I received answers from my query to the enrolled students and learned most have little experience with land records.

Volunteer & Own Work:
At the History Center, we continued rearranged the books. All of the books we are keeping are now in the new library room and it’s time to co-mingle our books with the donated books. The old library has the extra books that will continue to be for sale.

This week, I continued researching Joseph H. McFall, who was also known as Howard L Cornish and contacted a researcher on Ancestry. We exchanged copies of obituaries with different names.

OtherThis week I watched the San Francisco Giants play and lots of U.S. Open tennis matches. It has been fun watching some younger 18-year-olds play. I went for some walks to the mailbox with my husband

I’m reading the following books. I have been on a roll, finishing one book a week.

  • Stargazer by Anne Hillerman—Finished!
  • Not All Heroes by Josephine Cameron
  • Girl Waits with a Gun by Amy Stewart

Photos for this week: Some flowers from my walks this week.

Genealogists are great at documenting our ancestors’ lives but not so great documenting our own. I’ll write about what I’ve been doing the past week. This idea came from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musing, who started this meme.
