Monday Genea-pourri, Week of March 17-23, 2025

This week, my outdoor activities included trips to the History Center and the Oakland FamilySearch Center and flights to and from Seattle. I wore a mask in the airport and on the planes.

Genealogy
Genealogy Meetings:
On Monday, I met with Matt to go over what I need to do for the NGS conference while he is gone. I helped Jacqueline with reading and understanding Arkansas tax records at FamilySearch.

Genealogy Volunteer/Work:
I worked on accessioning some new donations at the History Center. We got some large county ledgers of coroner records. A wonderful donation! On Thursday, I took the minutes at the Contra Costa County Historical Society board meeting.

I had no researchers at the FamilySearch Center so I worked on getting more deeds from Erath County, Texas, using the full-text search in records that are locked from home.

On Friday, I flew to Seattle and spent the weekend with Jill and Mary at Mary’s cabin, and we discussed Applied Genealogy Institute and had lots of fun telling stories.

Genealogy Writing/Research:
The only writing I did this week was for the two blog posts.

Blog Posts Published:

For the theme of “historical event,” I wrote about my great-aunt, Ida Hork, who lived in San Francisco during the 1906 earthquake and fire. I found where they were living in 1905 and again in 1908.

I outlined some tasks I have started and others I hope to get done soon.

Webinars/Courses Viewed:
I attended the NARA SIG with Kinseekers, led by KB Barcomb and we discussed several parts of the NARA website.

I also attended the fifth SLIG class coordinated by Kimberly Powell. Rebecca Koford had us do some breakout room work on cluster research for solving identity conflicts.

Webinars attended:
  • GeneaBloggers 16 March 2025 RootsTech Recap by DearMyrtle, host (GeneaBloggers)
  • The Influence of Free and Cheap Land on Migration by Annette Burke Lyttle (BCG/LFTWebinars)
  • WWI Records, Resources, and Research Methodology by KB Barcomb (Sonoma Co Gen Soc)
  • Streamlining Genealogical Research Plans with AI: A Step-by-Step Guide by Diana Elder (Legacy Family Tree Webinars)
Other:
Our Wednesday Walkers hiked at a new place, starting at Larkey Park on the Briones-Mt. Diablo Trail until we got to the Walnut Creek open space area called Acalanes Open Space. The hillsides were covered with fiddlenecks, making the hills a little dark yellow. The views of Mt. Diablo were wonderful, too.

I am reading:
  • The Quest for Annie Moore of Ellis Island by Megan Smolenyak—FINISHED!
  • Miss Merkel: Mord in der Uckermark by David Safier (for German class—up to Chap 26)
Photos for this week.

Genealogists are great at documenting our ancestors’ lives but not so great at documenting our own. I’ll write about what I’ve been doing the past week. This idea came from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musing, who started this meme.

  1. Wasn't "The Search for Annie Moore" an incredible story of genealogical detective work? Really enjoyed it, found it inspiring
