Genealogy

Genealogy Volunteer/Work:
This week, I volunteered at the History Center once and attended also the board meeting. I spent most of the day dealing with the queries that came in email. I hosted the writing group on Thursday and after discussing Jacqueline’s work, we played with Claude and ChatGPT asking them editing ideas.

Genealogy Meetings:
I met with my renewal accountability group on Monday. The Military SIG also met on Monday and I presented about the information I found on the Student Army Training Corps (SATC) that one of my husband’s distant cousin was involved in at Middlebury College in Vermont. Jacqueline and I did not meet this week.

Genealogy Writing/Research:
This week I worked on the children of Jerry Sullivan and his wife Mary Sheehan. I will post this work in the coming week.

Blog Posts Published:

A Moment of Courage: Making the Move to Napa
This was a catch up post for week 40. The theme was “a moment of courage” and I could not think of something to write the previous week. This is about my Nana moving from Southern California to Napa.

A Life Compared to Mine: My Working Grandmothers
For 52 Ancestors this week, I wrote about the work my grandmothers did outside the home.

SNGF: Transcribe and/or Translate a Record on Claude AI Tool
Randy Seaver wanted us to use a MyHeritage tool but I don’t have a subscription, so I used Claude to analyze a German church record written in Latin.

Jeremiah “Jerry” Sullivan: A Miner Turned Farmer – 12 for ‘26
I wrote up the story of Jerry Sullivan who lived in Michigan and Minnesota.

Courses Attended:
I attended the SLIG course, Independence and Identity: 250 Years of Opportunity, Diversity, and Belonging in America, coordinated by Katherine R. Willson. This was week 4 and the previous sessions I viewed the recordings. I liked it better live in person.

Webinars Viewed:

  • Bringing Identities into Focus Using the Correlation of Power of Airtable by Amberly Beck (APG Writers SIG.

Other:
I went to the gym only on Friday, as I have been resting my knee. It was fine now that I have a knee support band.

Saturday, a group of the Golden State Chapter of APG attended the Archives Crawl in Sacramento. We visited the Center for Sacramento History, the State Archives, the State Library, and the Sacramento Public Library. In each place, other historical societies and organizations had tables for us to visit with. It was a very enjoyable day. My favorite place was the Center for Sacramento History. See the photos below -- what a great place! I also got to talk to people at the Internet Archive. Hopefully our chapter can visit soon.

Sunday, our family got together for lunch at the Spaghetti Factory in Concord. It was the first time we met the newest little grand-nephew, Ryder who is three months old. It was great catching up with what family is doing.

I am reading:

  • The Liberation Line: The untold story of how American Engineering and ingenuity won World War II by Christian Wolmar
  • Das große Giggler Geheimnis by Roddy Doyle

Photos for this week. Shots taken in the stacks at the Center for Sacramento History.

Genealogists are great at documenting our ancestors’ lives, but not so great at documenting our own. I’ll write about what I’ve been doing the past week. This idea came from Randy Seaver of Genea-Musing, who started this meme.
